On July 25 we moved to another beautiful Corps of Engineers campground—Canning Creek at Council Grove.
We had a beautiful view from the back window of our trailer—in daytime and at dusk.
Luckily the air conditioning in the trailer worked well. It was HOT! Day after day it was over 100 degrees. All kinds of critters wanted to excape the heat.
One day our thermometer registered 112!
But we still ventured into town. We ate at the Hays House, the oldest continuously open restaurant west of the Mississippi,
and we made an attempt to do a driving tour (26 stops) of the town of Council Grove. We actually got out of the car for the Kaw House and Museum. (Kansas gets its name from the Kaw or Kanza Indians.)
We also ventured out for the hermit cave—the same hermit (in a different cave) we encountered last year outside of Las Cruces NM.
As temperatures soared, the stops became drive-bys, including the stop devoted to the Council Tree (how Council Grove got its name). This is what remains of the tree where whites and Indians met to sign the treaty that made the Santa Fe Trail safe to travel.
There was a lot to see in Council Grove and due to the weather we only scratched the surface.
