Our next stop was Mesa Verde Park near Mancos, CO. Morefield campground (inside the park) was almost deserted except for the permanent residents—deer. They were thirsty and came to water faucets to drink.
We spent 4 entire days in the park, driving the curving roads, admiring expansive panoramas and viewing ancestral Puebloan dwellings.
We saw pit houses, villages and cliff dwellings from 600 AD to 1300 AD.
We also took an organized tour of the Cliff Palace, climbing up and down uneven steps and ladders made of tree limbs.
Throughout the park there was evidence of fires. It’s amazing how long it takes for an area to recover.
On our last day we took a 2 mile hike on Knife Edge Trail. Good exercise and great fun.
